Brass

BRASS

A malleable alloy of copper and zinc that has been utilized since prehistory, this metal is often used for decorative purposes, as well as for projects that are specifically geared towards its singular properties. When compared to other metals, brass produces a relatively low amount of friction; because of this, it is often used in applications where low amounts of friction are a benefit: doorknobs, locks, valves, fittings, handles, ammunition casings, etc. It also tends to be softer than most generally used metals, making it perfect for careful, artisan work, as well as for projects in which it is important to avoid sparking (often utilized for fittings that contain explosive gases). boone steel LLC carries many different sizes and form: flat, square, and round bars; sheets and plates.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND ABOUT BRASS

  • Since brass is an alloy made from both zinc and copper, it retains much of copper's germicidal capabilities. In medical settings, the use of brass doorknobs, handles, and other fixtures are particularly useful in limiting the spread of infectious bacteria, usually within eight hours.
  • Often confused with brass, bronze is also a copper alloy, but is made with tin instead of zinc. In the past, both terms were used to refer to both types of alloys, but the difference is now generally understood.
  • Like aluminum, the word "brass" does not refer to a specific alloy of copper and zinc, but rather to a class of alloys that always contain copper and zinc, but can contain these, and other, metals in different percentages. If you are looking for a specific composition, please contact our metal specialists and they will be happy to assist you.
  • Brass has excellent acoustic properties and a low melting point, making it the go-to metal for the construction and casting of musical instruments.
  • Brass is highly susceptible to ammonia-induced corrosion and cracking. Brittle cracks can cause dangerous accidents if the metal is put under pressure. Please use care when using or storing this metal around ammonia or any ammonia-producing agent. If you plan to use this metal in an environment that will contain ammonia, you must anneal the product, so that its surface will no longer be reactive.
